In which there is bowling, but especially DUCKPINS! [Jun. 16th, 2011|05:47 pm]

[Current Music |X-Files S2 on DVD]

Poppets love duckpins:

Last year i introduced some good friends of mine to the love that is duckpins bowling. The weekend was nicknamed #BowlingOdyssey2010, and we had so much fun that one year wasn't enough - it will be an annual event.

i'm putting together a little website for it, but while i'm doing that, i want to set down some details here for everyone who is interested in coming to #BowlingOdyssey2011:

July 30 ETA:
Dates: Friday-Sunday August 26-28, PLUS the "bookend" days of Thursday and Monday for anyone interested in making a long weekend out of it.

Activities: DUCKPINS! (of course) but also tenpins, wii bowling, gaming, eating and talking. AND, a trip to the American Visionary Art Museum to see the "Smile!" exhibit which includes a selection of Lisa Snellings' wonderful kinetic sculptures. This exhibit ends in early September, after which her sculptures won't be in display for a while.

Special Bowling Events: Friday and Saturday nights, Terrace Lanes (tenpins) has Rock-n-Bowl from 10pm to 1am. Also on Friday and Saturday nights, Walkersville Lanes (DUCKPINS) has Karaoke Bowling from 9:30pm to 1:30am. We did this last year (no we didn't sing) and it was a blast.

Sunday 11am-1pm, Terrace Lanes offers a 2-hr lane rental for $28 for up to 6 people on a lane. During the same time, Walkersville offers 50 cent games. Walkersville then from 2pm-6pm has their "family plan" of a 2-hour rental for $25, no limit on bowlers, and shoes included.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 8pm-11pm, Terrace Lanes has "buck-fifty" night - "Enjoy bowling, shoe rental, regular hot dog, slice of cheese pizza, small 12oz soda, 4oz Regular Cut Fries all for $1.50 each."

SO. That about covers the local bowling offers for #BowlingOdyssey2011. Lemme know what you'd like to do throughout the weekend.

And for my friends who can't make it this year, do you have weekends that work or DON'T work for you? i'm quite happy to start arranging a weekend for #BowlingOdyssey2012 or should that be #BowlingApocalypse2012???? ETA - The best time of year for me is from mid-June to mid-August, if that helps.

ETA - There will be HENNA! i gots me some fresh henna powder and i've been very happy with it so i'll mix some up for the weekend :-D

(7/10/11) ETA: i have put up a very last minute, style-less web page with some photos of duckpins, when Lisa was visiting in October. She is wicked with a camera.

Oh and i just added a few pics from #BowlingOdyssey2010!:

Get 'em while they're hot! DUCKPINS PHOTOS!

[Current Music |Spirited Away OST]

i like watching movies. i like having movies running as "background music" when i work. i like going to the movies with friends and family. Redbox has been my friend, LOL.

But recently i've found a new way to enjoy movies with friends. Through the magic of Twitter, my fiends get together, put on a movie simultaneously (or you know, as close as we can, heh), and start tweeting. i like it, especially when so many of my friends are hours or even TIME ZONES away from me. It's a way to bring everyone together for a couple of hours, having fun doing the same thing.

But, how to choose a movie? Sometimes there's a theme, sometimes it's just an idea. So here i'm going to post a list of movies as ideas for future movie tweet-ups. These are movies i have, so it's biased. Also, i have MOAR movies than what's listed here, so if any of my fiends out there want to add to the list, let's do it!

Movies i've Tweeted-up/Live-tweeted so far:

LOTR 3: Return of the King
The Matrix
Spirited Away

(Some of the) Movies i own that i'd like to Tweet-up:

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
BladeRunner
Alien, Aliens
Sherlock Holmes
LOTR 1, 2
Pirates of the Carribbean 1, 2, 3
Star Wars 4,5,6 (i just got the pre-Special Edition, yes! Old special effects FTW! and Han Shot First(TM) But i also have the Special Edition. And 1,2 and 3, but not the enthusiasm, LOL)
Avatar
Indiana Jones 1, 2, 3
Harry Potter 1-6
A Fish Called Wanda
Logan's Run
Die Hard
The Dark Knight
Mirrormask
Stardust
Coraline
Up
The Nightmare Before Christmas

***ETA:
Wall-E
The Addams Family (Raul Julia FTW!)
Time Bandits
Jurassic Park

What say you, my fiends???

***ETA:

Tweet-up Movies i don't have (yet):

Back to the Future, 1, 2, 3
Let the Right One In (original)
The Animatrix

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Mid-Atlantic. This is what everyone calls a Philadelphia accent although it's also the accent of south Jersey, Baltimore, and Wilmington. Well, everyone that lives near there, that is. Outsiders can tell you talk differently from them even though they can't tell what your accent is.

If you are not from there, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A New Yorker who, unlike most New Yorkers, rhymes "on" with "dawn"; or
(b) A Yat from New Orleans.
You are probably not from Eastern New England or the Great Lakes area, and certainly not from anywhere in the West or Canada.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

SONIC BOOM Foppet [Jan. 18th, 2010|12:45 am]

[Current Music |Beetlejuice on DVD]

Things have been quiet for me on the Foppet front, mainly cause i'm still working on my house in between working on work. But a friend of mine asked for my help, and it is leading to a special Foppet.

Some of you familiar with the podcasting community have probably already heard of the sudden death of Tee Morris' wife Natalie, leaving behind Tee and their 5-year-old daughter Serena (a.k.a "Sonic Boom"). My own involvement with the podcasting community goes back to 2005, when i chaired my first Balticon (39), and my good friend Paul Fischer suggested we do a Balticon Podcast.  It's since been my pleasure to get to know such a warm and generous group of people.

Which brings me back to Foppet.  An auction is going on right now to raise money for Sonic Boom's future.  All the details can be found here on The Boom Effect site. During my talk with Paul, the idea for a SONIC BOOM Foppet solidified in my head, and as soon as i've finished painting her, i'll add her to the auction.

The unfinished paint job isn't much to see, so instead i have the design i did in Photoshop. The end result will be different of course, but, when Paul said it would have to be LOUD to be a SONIC BOOM, i told him, it just has to be loudly PAINTED....

So go check out the auction, SONIC BOOM Foppet will be there in a day or two, depending on how long it takes paint to dry so i can photo her, heh.

i saw a shooting star. About an hour ago, on my way home from helping daecabhir sort our book collection, i was preparing to turn into the gas company parking lot to drop off the gas bill night drop. i just happened to look up and see what looked like a stray firework flashing across the sky, except it was arcing down rather than up, and there was no noise (i had my car window open). It lasted about a second, maybe a second and a half.

i looked online for images and this is the closest thing to what i saw (after i massaged it in Photoshop, that is):

Huge it was, just like a firework. And yet, it was silent. The moon will be officially full in about three hours. i think i found a bit of faerie tonight.

Anyone else seen something similar?

It did feel a little weird, not running Balticon anymore, but it wasn't completely work-free, heh. i was sort of the con "ottoman" - when the Chair wasn't available, people put their feet on me, LOL. And by all accounts, our Guests of Honor had the best convention they'd had in a while.

Poppets were there, in the Art Show, and in the company of myself and a few others :-). Poppets let you know what they want. A year ago, i carried three in my purse. During Balticon last year, two of them disappeared, and i couldn't find them right away. Turns out, they preferred my car, 'cause i found them on the floor of the driver's side, almost under the seat. Now they ride in my car in the ashtray (clean since i don't smoke). The last poppet, who stayed in my purse, is now my "Ambassador" :-)

So to lead off the photo dump, here is my Poppet with our Ghost of Honor, Douglas Adams:

[Current Music |Hopeful Machines: Always Today]

The good thing about an early flight west is that i don't spend the full day traveling. The not so good thing about it is Oh-my-gawd-it's-early (thank you Robin Williams).

Yesterday was for planning and working on something i brought with me for a future Poppet Planet sale.

Today was for photography, in and out of the water. It is hot here. The heat is oppressive, reminding me of a week ago in Frederick where it went just over 100 but the humidity was fairly high. Here it's not so humid, but the heat still surrounds you, reminding you where you are. Um, inside a giant convection oven i think.

i saw a hummingbird get a snack at the feeder on Lisa's back porch. Then it landed on a nearby hanging plant. And it stayed there. Long minutes. i mean, more than 5 minutes. i had time to get my camera and take photos, that's how long that bird stayed on that plant.

Maybe it was so hot the bird didn't want to spend the energy to fly. i told Lisa it was too hot for a hummer. LOL. i think it wasn't even noon yet, here's how hot it was:

Lisa prepped some poppets for underwater photography, and in the afternoon we drove to Ben's place, with a quick detour to Tatooine to take some photos of me trying not to faint in the heat, LOL.

We took underwater photos with Lisa's digital camera inside a waterproof bag i brought with me, and also an underwater film camera of Lisa's. The digital photos, which are super cool, are here on Lisa's blog, i highly recommend you check them out :-D

Tomorrow is for art. Tuesday is more art. And more photography.

Wednesday is for home.

First though, i went up to the farm last night to see my baby and start weekly training up again. For a while though, it looks like i'll be focusing on building back my tolerance, asthma-wise, cause i wasn't even able to give her a complete grooming before i couldn't breathe. But that will change over time.

My baby girl horse was just great, though. i was able to lead her out of the field and tie her up at the fence to feed her dinner and groom her. She even picked up her front near foot for me, but by then i had no energy left so i just checked the one foot. Getting her back in the field was just as easy, though that was because Wendy distracted the other babies with their dinners, LOL.

So, i have no photos for you, so instead you should watch this video that i found on Cute Overload (a really good place to visit when you're feeling an AWWWWWW deficit, LOL). This is a Musical Freestyle Dressage performance from the 2006 World Equestrian Games:

My little diva is home! After..... wow six weeks in PA. i wasn't able to make the trip with her yesterday, and by the time i got to the farm she had had time to show how glad she was to be out in some open space. By rolling in the mud, LOL. Well, on one side at least, here is her "clean" side:

The graft is healing well. It will never completely go away, but, in this photo (sorry about the blurriness), it appears as a stripe down the front of the eye. A bit of the healthy cornea is visible on the inside front of the eye, which is good because it means most likely she will have at least a little forward vision.

Having been away from the "herd" for almost two months, she comes back in in the bottom of the pecking order, LOL. But Gallant was happy to see her, coming to the fence nearest the round pen and giving her kisses over the top of the fence. Awww how sweet. (well, she's in season, so it's really no surprise, LOL)

Now is the time for me to go up there every week and continue some training, to make the most of the two months of constant handling she's just had :-)

[Current Music |A Drop of Silence - Kitaro]

Here's Ravyn's mug shot from p/r/i/s/o/n/recovery stall at the lay-up facility near the New Bolton Center. If you look you can see a pink eye on the left (her right) and a green eye on the right (her left). The green is just the reflection in her pupil of the camera flash, that's the "good" eye, LOL.

i drove up today, to see her and to bring her about three weeks' worth of dietary supplements that she normally gets when she's at home. The drive was uneventful and fairly quick, which is how we likes it, Precioussssss. Everyone who's seen her is so impressed with how easygoing she is. i will now quote Jack Sparrow (CAPTAIN! Jack Sparrow) and say,"There'll be no living with her now," hehe. But no, seriously, she is doing fine and not fussing about receiving medication in her eye..... four times a day now.

And now, behind the curtain, clinical documentation of her recovery (big ewwww factor here if you're squeamish)Collapse )

My little diva is being pampered (LOL) and cared for very well. She needs at least two more weeks of meds, and the lavage will stay in until they are sure she won't need any more treatment. But she seems to be healing well and dealing with her surroundings pretty calmly, which is a big relief.

i probably won't be able to go back up there until it's time to take her home, i just have too much work to finish before leaving for a week's vacation on the 18th. Yikes!!!!

Ravyn had her surgery first thing Wednesday morning, as her eye had deteriorated overnight and the doc was very worried that the eye would rupture. i'm still waiting on photos from the procedure, but, she did very well and, after an extra-long post-surgery nap, got up from the mat like a champ and walked right into her stall. And of course, started eating :-) . She was dressed in her "hospital gown" and even "booties".

Behind the cut, a post-op photo and detailed description...Collapse )

i received email from the doc this morning telling me how Ravyn is settling into her stall, enjoying being groomed, and pretty much doing fine. At home, she is field-kept, she hasn't been in a stall since she arrived as a three-month-old baby. But i guess when she gets home she'll be expecting more glamorous accommodations. Well, she *is* a diva ;-) . The staff that handles her at the hospital just can't get over how well behaved she is for a 4-year-old green horse that has had minimal training. She is truly special, and that's not just the talk of a proud mommy :-D .

More news later.
